– Vanessa Goodship : Management, recycling and reuse of waste composite (2009) –

This chapter describes a thermal process based on a fluidised bed for the recycling of glass and carbon fibre from thermoset composites. The process is particularly suitable for producing high quality fibre from contaminated or mixed materials. The chapter will describe the fluidised bed process, and detail the quality of the fibres that are recovered. Applications for the reuse of the fibre that have been investigated will then be explained and the prospects for commercial scale operation considered. Current and future research directions will be outlined; other relevant research activities will also be mentioned.

Created to enable the composites sector to understand the environmental and social impacts associated with composite production and assist with the decisions made about material and process choice. Twelve different environmental impacts are individually scored and totalled to give an overall environmental impact summary rating, and two social impact ratings are also given. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been used in this guide for environmental investigation.

La recyclabilité des composites est encore perçue comme délicate et difficile, du fait de leur hétérogénéité et du recours encore fréquent à des matrices thermodurcissables, donc infusibles. Cet aspect constitue a priori un frein à leur pénétration plus large de certains marchés. La pression réglementaire pousse actuellement les industriels de la filière des matériaux composites à développer des solutions de recyclage et de valorisation. Des filières de démantèlement, de recyclage et de valorisation de ces matériaux tendent à se mettre en place par secteur d’application ou de manière transversale.
